home sweet home

035.jpgThis is the second time I am writing this post.  I lost the first one when I forgot to click ‘Save’.  How long have I used a computer?  At any rate, this post will look entirely different than the first and that’s OK.  The first didn’t make sense, this one will.  So, I wanted to thank you for your patience with my posting hiatus.  I lost my blogging program in the last couple of weeks which makes posting a bit difficult (and I apologize if this is formatted poorly because of this loss).  Also, my mommy is in town from out of state…which brings me to my thought. (Save)

Over the years, I have had a number of friends become ‘mommies’.  Many of them were blessed to be near their own parents during this time, but many were not.  To those of you who live far away from your own mommies and daddies, I am sorry.  I get it now.  My transition from Southern California to the Seattle area became WAY MORE DIFFICULT when I became a mommy. (Save)  I am thankful that I have a lot of surrogate ‘Grandparents’ for my little one here, but its not the same.  I am so enjoying spending time with my own mom this week, and loving watching her be a grandma.  Next week, my husband’s mom will be visiting, and I look forward to watching her be a grandma as well.  And the more and more time I spend as Abby’s mommy, the more and more I want to glean from my own mom and mother-in-law.  (Save)

I can think of a few readers that live away from their families as well.  Any thoughts?

  1. I live close to my mother and my mother-in-law, and it has been very enriching and helpful having them nearby. I’ve learned so much about the parent I want to be, and challenged some things about how I was raised that I don’t want to duplicate with my children. I’ve also learned a lot about my husband by watching his mother interact with my kids. For moms who are far away from their own moms: take heart! I think that if you are intentional about your time together, you can learn a lot from someone during a short visit.

  2. You are right, Rachel. Time spent with family is so precious now. I went from working in the same building as my mom and sister, and living within a mile of the rest of my family, to seeing them a couple times a year in person, and once a week on a computer screen. But how I appreciate them, and their encouragement.

  3. Thank you, Erin, for writing this post for me to read (although it has been months since you wrote it, it fits today) To avoid the LONGEST blog comment in history, I wrote about this in my blog tonight.
